I recently connected my laptop straight to my modem, to see how much my connection would improve (I was previously running on wireless). This is the result:

Before, my DL was around 8mb/s and UL around .8mb/s. This was a nice surprise. I have a Netgear wireless router and didn't think it would take that much speed away from me. Any insight would be appreciated.

If your running any kind of wireless security than, automatically, you are cutting your download rate in half. Here on our home wireless network, my wife is wireless and pulls %30 less than I do hard-wired. If I use WEP on the wireless than that gets cut in half. Either way, it's still better than Dial-up. Have a good one.

Thanks Draco. You're right about the dial-up. I remember having 56k, good ol' NetZero, and now I'm complaining about not getting my full 18mb/s dl speed.

wireless just sucks for gaming you get alot more lage.

Netgear and maybe a few other vendors are now hawking small, relatively inexpensive boxes that do QoS tricks to improve the gaming experience on wireless. I was noticing them on the shelf at my soon-to-be-ex CompUSA store in San Antonio. I have no idea whether they actually do anything noticeably useful, but if you've got some extra coin burning a hole in your pocket, it might be worth a try.

Humm....Maybe I should do some tweaking.
On XP 5MB/sec service from a Embarq 660 modem in bridged DMZ mode into a wired connection through a WRT54GS Linksys
I'll come straight through the modem later and post results.

This is straight through the modem not much better but both are a little short of 5 MB/sec

Uh I feel bad now, my wireless dl speed is 13967, ul speed is 1001, directly in, 18359 dl, 9425 dl.
I have a CISCO wirelss router with 4 10/100/1000 connections on the back along with 2 WAN ports that are 10/100/1000 and can setup two ISP's at the same time with sampling (samples which is working only and switch's to the working ISP ONLY, will NOT pull from both at the same time). My wireless is a 54, and does NOT broadcast, it is set on a channel with a 23 letter/number key and works well. I use my Laptop now for TS and the Desktop that I restored as a game machine (only). the game machines up and download speed are faster, and I am finally loving it, I used to have to use wireless all the time for I traveled from motel to motel, state to state, work work work, can anyone say REST.
