Any idea why two different PC on the same router using the same browser would have highly different results in a speed test?

I first notice a huge drop is speed on my tower PC a week ago, reported it and am awaiting a phone call from ISP from tech support My current speed test is reporting only IE 8 = 6.5Mb down and 1.74 Mb up & Fire fox = 8.3 up and 1.7 down. It use to be ( a week ago) well balanced between the two browsers @ 30Mb down and 7 MB up.

Now I hooked up new lap top today for a comparison if is (RAID 0) with two striped SSDs' & I7 processor....Now I know the tow machines are completely different the tower is 7 years old but I was looking for a reason as to why the tower speed has dropped so badly and I was confused when I hooked up the LT so I am just posting the laptop results as an odd point of reference.

Laptops IE 8 for a speed test = 14.7 Mb and 11.3 Mg so today that looks fine...but but then I hit the test again in IE 8 I then get a return of 13.7MB Down and 3.38 Mb Up when I switch to Fire fox on the lap top the speed is reported as 12.26 Up and 12.70 up hit it again a second time and it is 15.7 and 10.67. So the laptops results are bouncing every where.

But my problem is the old tower for the past three years I have been paying for a 15/15 connection but as my ISP even stated where i live they have been unable to provide it so the best they could do is the 30/8.

If the laptop is wireless, then there will always be some variation in the speed. But as to why you are having such a drop in the tower's speed, could be a ethernet card problem, or a router problem, or even a problem in the speed of the computer itself. I know that over time a computer will lose speed. That has happened to 2 of my computers already. (I have 7 on my home network) I have one that is so slow now its not even funny and it is just 3 years old now. And I have a laptop that is really slow and it is just 2 years old. I have re-loaded both of these computers several times, but they are still slow. I am going to have to replace them eventually. You might consider that could be your problem too.

One other thing, do you have a broad band connection? If you are using cable or satellite, that is a broad band connection and it depends on what time of day you are using and testing at. Broad band connections have a bad tendency of fluctuating when there are more users on in prime time than in off time.

I have fiber and I believe that you are correct I believe i am losing the ethernet....all pcs are hard wired to the router. Speed tests have been all over the place on the tower....good excuse for a new PC :)

Or you run a program called MaceCraft Powertools to speed up the system and registry again. I saved many computers from the dump that way. If you need any help then contact me.

O thanks I appreciate that but it isn't really a system slow down, It is a connection slow down between this PC and the Net.

You might be suprized to find things in the OS that slow down a system, check all your drivers with a utility to insure they are up to date I use DriverWhiz, works great, then a Utility to check your registery, that will really help things, then change your drop cables with the other system and see what happens, cables moving around go out and still look good, even will pass the testers, I always carry extra just to test, one of my fav tricks is to stick a pin thru a cable and cut it off even on both sides, takes a tech a long time to figure it out and does some really strange things. Also your NIC's, one might be a 100 at full and the other one might be a 10/100/1000 at half, all sort of things can happen but more than likly, drivers, registery, and most of all ----- Operator head space and timing LOL
